Race Report from Tony
================
Race 8, 13th July
The whole day was spent staring forlornly at the tops of the trees, looking
for the barest whisper of a breeze. Finally at about 6pm the odd leaf
started to waver a bit. The white whales were heaved, dropped or dragged to
the water’s edge!
Eight contestants set forth towards the far end of the lake, to tackle a
north easterly breeze. Some had to be bribed with the offer of ready rig
sales to entice them onto the water
“Well there’s no wind, I can’t be bothered” Were Jo’s negative
comments. But the promise of a ready rigged sail was enough to persuade
her.
Suddenly from out of no where sprung up a very respectable breeze. White
whales were seen dashing hither and thither, some of them even on the
plane, nearly all of them out of control. The starter considered ordering
the fleet back home and reverting to short boards and slalom. But it was a
long way back and frankly he couldn’t be assed!
The whistle went for the two minutes and people were seen crashing
backwards and forwards across the start line. Your lake Manager was having
considerable difficulty!
Trying to blow a whistle, look at a stop watch and still trying to get a
reasonable start himself was proving a challenge
The start whistle went and Mike George shot into the lead, to be frank that
is the last anyone ever saw of him, he positively destroyed the opposition,
although Dave Lewis tried to make a race of it, it was all to no avail.
Further back Tim, Tony and Chris were battling it out. Tony tried to luff
Tim on the first broad reach, failed miserably. Tim covered him; your lake
manager still hooked lost all his wind and fell in backwards, taking Tim
out as he went. All to the amusement of Chris as he sailed past, all be it
a bit gingerly as someone had nobbled his whale and removed all the non
slip, his board now resembling a skating ring. Suddenly through the mist
came Martin, shouting that well none nautical phrase
“Coming through” and then Jo sporting an ex Peter Hart 7.5 ( Guy Cribb
eat your heart out) made a run and closed on the lake manager. Mad Janet
was flying around in no particular direction, while Jonathan was still
trying to come to grips with a race board, frequently pirouetting and then
going for short swims!
Lap two saw Mike somewhere on the horizon, further back Dave pursued with
little hope of achieving anything. Tony had a good upwind leg and clawed
himself back into 3rd, while Chris dropped back a bit on his skating ring.
Tony now played his trump card at the beginning of the third lap, in a vain
attempt to confuse the opposition; he had told some there would be two
laps, while others were informed there were actually three. Unfortunately
this ploy only worked on Chris who packed in after two laps, convinced he
had finished, it nearly worked on Dave, but he was suddenly aware that the
rest had carried on while he was heading home, he doubled back just in time
to retrieve the situation
By the end of lap three Mike was so far ahead that he had changed and was
sitting down taking in the view by the time the rest of us appeared. Dave
took second while Tim nipped past Tony to take third, Tony was 4th, While
Martin did really well to take 5th (Obviously did well with a borrowed 8.5,
has he considered buying one I ask myself?)
Joe came 6th while Janet lost interest and retired and Chris moaned that he
was told it was two laps
(You can’t trust anyone these days can you)
While the BBQ was consumed. Dave produced a set of scales endeavouring to
prove a point!
And what point is this you ask?
“ Does Mike George have helium in his bones?”
